Red Stamp Art Gallery, in collaboration with Sarenco Foundation, presents for the first time in the Netherlands the exhibition of Margaret Majo, a leading contemporary African artist, born in 1956 in Zimbabwe (Murewa) where she lives and works (Harare). After training in the Chinembiri Training Centre in Mbare, where she learned skills and income-generating activities, Margaret Majo studied design and illustration at the Harare Polytechnic. In 1991 Margaret was selected to exhibit at the Zimbabwe Heritage Exhibitions in the National Gallery, continuing since then to show in international galleries , including the Haus des Kulturen der Welt in Berlin, the Serpentine Gallery in London, the Zak Gallery in Furth and the Pyramid in Nuremberg.
In 2012, together with the artist John Goba from Sierra Leone, she has been selected as the winner of the fourth edition of the International Biennial of Contemporary Art in Malindi (2012-2013).
Majo is an extremely patient artist and an high quality paintress ; her work owns great decorative finesse. She is one of the most interesting female artists in Africa, together with Seni Camara, Esther Mahlangu Reinata Sadimba.
"Born in 1956 in Murewa, Zimbabwe, Margaret Majo has studied art at the Polytechnic in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. From 1991 she showed her works in many exhibitions in Harare, in private galleries and at the national Gallery of Zimbabwe.
Her first works are some drawings on paper.
A German teacher, a woman who was living in Harare and working in a school reserved to talented girls, after seeing Majo’s drawings, urged her to continue on the path of art. That is how Margaret had the idea of painting the metallic bottle cups of soda’s bottles and to stick them on wooden painted tablets, to create stories of the village, everyday’s life or the stylised recovery (of incredible graphic elegance) of the tradition of tribal masks.
Margaret Majo was the beginner of this new way of making art, a curious and intriguing one, connected to the idea, wholly african, to operate for a recovery-recycle of the object to be thrown away.
Also her friend Elisabeth Luna, immediately after, dedicated herself to this type of work and these two women are the only original artists that have been operating and still operate along this line defined by their own as 'top art'. Many were and are now their imitators but, as Margaret Majo says, 'the artist's job as a copier will never have the quality of the original artist'.
Despite the hard times for economy, Margaret has many estimators and collectors who give her the chance of living more than decently in her nice house with a garden, on the ourtskirts of Harare.
Each of the metallic bottle cups tells a complete story: its a miniature of rural life, where men and women cooperate to improve the standard of a difficult life in a country that had infinite fights for the liberation from the English colonialism, fights that temporarily ended in 1980 with the achievement of the independence and the division of the ex Ian Smith's Rhodesia in different autonomous areas, such as Zimbabwe and Zambia.
German art merchants were the first to discover and valorize her work, from Matt Fisher to Bernd Kleine-Gunk. The undersigned saw an exhibition of Margaret in Norimberga, in Germany, was enraptured and left for Zimbabwe to meet her. Since then Majo's expositions in Italy were numerous and had an enormous success.
In 2012 Majo was awarded the special prize at the Fourth International Art Biennial of Malindi."

Red Stamp Art Gallery, in collaborazione con Fondazione Sarenco, presenta per la prima volta in Olanda la mostra di Margaret Majo, artista di spicco dell'arte contemporanea africana, nata nel 1956 in Zimbabwe (Murewa), dove vive e lavora (Harare). Dopo gli studi al Chinembiri Training Centre a Mbare, dove acquista varie competenze in economia domestica, Margaret Majo studia design e illustrazione al Politecnico di Harare.
Nel 1991 Margaret e' selezionata per esporre alle Zimbabwe Heritage Exhibitions alla National Gallery, continuando da allora ad esibire in gallerie internazionali, tra cui la Haus des Kulturen der Welt di Berlino, la Serpentine Gallery di Londra, la Zak a Furth e la Pyramid a Norimberga.
Nel 2012, insieme con l'artista John Goba della Sierra Leone, è stata selezionata come vincitrice della quarta edizione della Biennale Internazionale d'Arte Contemporanea di Malindi (2012-2013).
Majo è un artista estremamente paziente e di alta qualità; il suo e' un lavoro di grande raffinatezza decorativa. Si tratta di uno degli artisti femminili più interessanti in Africa, insieme a Seni Camara, Esther Mahlangu e Reinata Sadimba.
"Nata nel 1956 a Murewa, Zimbabwe, Margaret Majo ha studiato arte al Politecnico di Harare, capitale dello Zimbabwe. Dal 1991 espone in numerose mostre ad Harare, sia in gallerie private che alla National Gallery of Zimbabwe.
I suoi primi lavori sono dei disegni su carta.
Un’insegnante tedesca che viveva ad Harare e lavorava in una scuola riservata a ragazze di talento, dopo aver visto i disegni della Majo, la sollecitò a continuare sulla strada dell’arte.
Fu così che a Margaret venne l’idea di dipingere i tappi metallici delle bottiglie di soda e di applicarli su delle tavolette di legno dipinte, a creare storie del villaggio, della vita di ogni giorno o del recupero stilizzato (di grande eleganza grafica) della tradizione delle maschere tribali.
Margaret Majo è stata l’iniziatrice di questo nuovo modo di fare arte, modo curioso e intrigante, collegato all’idea, del tutto africana, di operare per un recupero-riciclo dell’oggetto da buttare.
Anche la sua amica Elisabeth Luna, immediatamente dopo, si dedica a questo tipo di lavoro artistico e loro due sono le sole artiste originali che hanno operato e operano su questa linea definita da loro stesse ‘top art’. Numerose sono state e sono ancora attualmente le loro imitatrici ma, come dice Margaret Majo, ‘il lavoro dell’artista copiatore non avrà mai la qualità del lavoro dell’artista originale’.
Nonostante i difficili tempi per l’economia, Margaret ha parecchi estimatori e collezionisti che le permettono di vivere più che decorosamente nella sua bella casa con giardino, alla periferia di Harare.
Ognuno dei suoi tappi metallici racconta una storia completa: è una miniatura della vita rurale, dove uomini e donne cooperano per migliorare lo standard di una vita difficile in un paese che ha visto lotte infinite per la liberazione dal colonialismo inglese, lotte provvisoriamente concluse nel 1980 con il conseguimento dell’indipendenza e con la divisione dell’ex Rhodesia di Ian Smith in differenti territori autonomi, quali lo Zimbabwe e lo Zambia.
Sono i mercanti d’arte tedeschi per primi a scoprire e valorizzare il suo lavoro, da Matt Fischer a Bernd Kleine-Gunk. Il sottoscritto vede una mostra di Margaret a Norimberga, in Germania, ne rimane estasiato e parte per lo Zimbabwe a incontrarla. Da allora le mostre della Majo in Italia sono state numerose e con grande successo.
Nel 2012 la Majo vince il premio della Quarta Biennale Internazionale d’Arte di Malindi."

Red Stamp Art Gallery, in samenwerking met Sarenco Stichting presenteert voor de eerste keer in Nederland de tentoonstelling van Margaret Majo, prominente kunstenaar van hedendaagse Afrikaanse kunst, geboren in 1956 in Zimbabwe (Murewa), waar ze woont en werkt (Harare). Na zijn studie aan Chinembiri Training Centre in Mbare, waar ze krijgt diverse vaardigheden in huishoudkunde, Margaret studeerde vormgeving en illustratie aan de Harare Polytechnic. In 1991 had Margaret Majo haar werk geselecteerd voor weergave op de Zimbabwaanse Heritage Tentoonstellingen in de National Gallery; sindsdien heeft zij exposities in internationale galeries,
waaronder het Haus des Kulturen der Welt in Berlijn, de Serpentine Gallery in Londen,de Zak in Furth, de Pyramid in Neurenberg.In 2012, samen met de kunstenaar John Goba uit Sierra Leone, ze werd geselecteerd als de winnaar van de vierde editie van de Internationaal Biënnale van Hedendaagse Kunst in Malindi (2012-2013). Majo is een uiterst geduldig kunstenaar en van de hoogste kwaliteit; haar werk is van de hoogste decoratieve kwaliteit. Zij is een van de meest interessante vrouwelijke kunstenaars in Afrika, samen met Seni Camara, Esther Mahlangu en Reinata Sadimba.
"Geboren in 1956 in Murewa, Zimbabwe, Margaret Majo studeerde kunst aan de Polytechnische van Harare, Zimbabwe kapitaal. Vanaf 1991 exposeerde zij in talrijke tentoonstellingen in Harare, zowel in prive-galerijen in de National Gallery of Zimbabwe.
Zijn vroege werken zijn tekeningen op papier.
De Duitse leraar die leefde in Harare en werkte in een prive-school voor meisjes van talent, na het zien van de ontwerpen van Majo, drong er bij haar om verder te gaan op het pad van de kunst.
Zo kwam het dat Margaret het idee had de metalen doppen van de frisdrank flessen te schilderen en deze toe te passen op geverfde houten planken, naar verhalen te creeren van het dorp, van het leven van alledag of van het gestileerde herstel (van grote grafische elegantie) van de traditie van tribale maskers.
Margaret Majo was de initiatiefnemer van deze nieuwe manier van kunst te maken, zo nieuwsgierig en intrigerend, gekoppeld aan het idee, helemaal Afrikaans, om te werken voor een herstel-recycling van het object te gooien.
Haar vriendin Elizabeth Luna, onmiddellijk na, wijdde zich aan dit type van kunstwerk en beiden zijn de enige originele artiesten die hebben gewerkt en werken op deze lijn gedefinieerd door zichzelf 'top kunst'. Vele waren en zijn nog steeds op dit moment hun navolgers, maar zoals Margaret Majo zegt, 'het werk van de navolgster kunstenaar zal nooit de kwaliteit van het werk van de oorspronkelijke kunstenaar hebben.'
Ondanks de moeilijke tijden voor de economie, Margaret heeft vele bewonderaars en verzamelaars die het mogelijk maken dat ze meer dan behoorlijk leeft in zijn prachtige woning met tuin , aan de rand van Harare.
Elk van de metalen pluggen vertelt een compleet verhaal: het is een miniatuur van het landelijke leven, waar mannen en vrouwen samenwerken om de standaard van een moeilijk leven te verbeteren in een land dat heeft gezien eindeloze strijden voor de bevrijding van het Britse kolonialisme, die tijdelijk eindigde in 1980 met het bereiken van de onafhankelijkheid en de verdeling van de voormalige Rhodesië van Ian Smith in verschillende zelfstandigen gebieden, zoals Zimbabwe en Zambia.
De Duitse kunsthandelaren zijn de eersten om haar werk te ontdekken en te waarderen , van Matt Fischer tot Bernd Kleine-Gunk. Ik zag een tentoonstelling van Margaret in Neurenberg, Duitsland, ik werd verrukt en ik vertrok naar Zimbabwe om haar te ontmoeten. Van dan zijn de tentoonstellingen van Majo in Italië talrijk en met groot succes geweest.
In 2012 Majo wint de prijs van Vierde Internationale Biënnale van Kunst in Malindi."
